The project transforms and re-purposes discarded books into blank canvasses for the production and exchange of local histories. In Richmond, VA, at the Main Branch of the Richmond Public Library, a thousand blank books are being created for anyone in the community to check out, bring home, fill with their histories and bring back to the library to be included in the permanent collection. The resulting installation includes a thousand micro-monuments, becomes the real and symbolic meeting place for alienated publics, and offers sustainable, collective and critical alternatives for the form and function of public art. While in some instances, public spaces and institutions have invited patron participation, it is often through internet based means. People's Library champions collective production as an avenue for face to face interaction between diverse publics. The project reflects the histories, needs, desires of local residents, and re-interprets public institutions as a space for production, meditation, and alternative education. Individuals in youth programs at each library will co-facilitate a series of workshops. At each workshop, which are free and open to the public, participants will complete various tasks, engage in conversation about contemporary art, and learn functional creative skills: Papermaking: sourcing pages from the discarded books, participants will blend, pulp and dry materials to create new paper. Creative Content: participants will collectively formulate, choose and print the prompts to be included in each book. Bookbinding: the re-purposed paper will be rebound into the covers of the discarded books. The Bookshelf: participants will collectively design and construct the interactive sculpture that will house the books. Card Catalog: participants will design, construct and implement a system for the books to be checked out by the public. This system will include space for the reader to reflect and react to their chosen book, the project, and the over-all experience. project featuring collaborative practice, interactive installations, and workshops held in various jails and prisons. Functioning in multiple ways, the project uses photography as the catalyst for social engagement and strives to facilitate a humanistic window into the histories, realities, and desires of some of the 2.3 million incarcerated Americans. At each workshop inmates are asked: “If you had a window in your cell, what place from your past would it look out to?” Participants provide a detailed memory from the chosen location, and describe how they would want the photograph composed. The locations are then photographed and an image is handed or mailed back to the incarcerated participants. While the images facilitate room for personal associations, the written descriptions become the meeting place for alienated publics and blur our notions of personal, public and exiled space. The project is realized through a set of limitations. Those set by each incarcerated participant--who provide each image’s location and corresponding composition--and those limitations argued by many to be integral to the photographic medium For an upcoming multi-site installation and gallery exhibit of the work, corresponding programing will include a live public conference call with incarcerated individuals, a series of ‘Ted’ talks performed by local professors corresponding to topic requests by inmates, film screenings, letter writing to prisoners, and teach-ins led by community members affected by incarceration. Additionally, a set of newspaper boxes will be placed across the city. Each will be filled with newspapers including a statement, information on local prison demographics, a ‘seeking photos’ section written by prisoners, and a corresponding map to each exiled location so that individuals within the community can fulfill the photo requests and co-produce the project. With an emphasis on collective authorship and alternative pedagogy, the project strives to challenge the form and function of artistic practice and exhibition, and becomes the real and symbolic meeting ground for segments of society that are commonly alienated from one another. The size of photographs presented to the public is consistent with the restrictions imposed on pictures sent to prisons. This limitation appeals to the viewer to intimately engage with these spaces, their histories, and the human absence. "Write Home Soon," is an ongoing project featuring participant created postcards, each depicting and describing a place--physical, mental, metaphoric--that an individual has lost access to. The collection derived from a series of workshops, street engagements, or by individuals mailing cards into the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, DC. The Washington Project for the Arts, and curator Raquel de Anda originally selected the project to be exhibited for the AMA's 2012-13 exhibit "Ripple Effect." The exhibit showcased international work that aims to incorporate viewers as direct participants, addresses pressing social issue, and blurs the boundary between artistic practice and social engagement. By incorporating personal histories from a myriad of social situations and inviting viewers to engage and tangibly connect to the memories of others, the installation strives to facilitate a challenging and humanistic meeting ground for those that are commonly kept apart in society. Over 40 workshops have been held in prisons, shelters, museums, studios for disabled artists, senior citizen facilities, mental health clinics, schools, libraries, street corners, and a multitude of other locations. While the project is radically inclusive, participants become more than producers, or objects, but become the viewers and curators of their own work within the exhibit. Due to the context of the AMA exhibit (the museum is situated within a couple blocks of the White House, National Mall, and other institutions of cultural and political power) the installation was designed to present alternatives for public participation in the design, production, and engagement of monuments. While each postcard provides a safe and autonomous space for personal histories, self-representation, and intimate reflection, the collection as a whole reifies the complex, fluid, and diverse nature of our communities. Write Home Soon attempts to instigate a level, and more importantly, a quality of participation and engagement that challenges and showcases our collective alienation--from each other, from ideas and definitions of place, and from the 'art' that we are rarely able to interact with. All participation is anonymous, the idea being, these spaces and memories, can/could stand in for any of us. low-income housing communities in Washington, DC to the US Capitol building, a symbol of our country’s prosperity. As the capitol of our country, DC should stand as a model for all of the hope and potential our collective power can encourage and facilitate. Instead, it has come to represent the growing disparity between the people of our country, and its governing body. Neighboring monumental symbols of power, freedom and equality, are communities living in abject poverty, located in a city where 1 in 20 residents have HIV. This project focuses on a specific group of communities, in view of the capitol building, which are oppressed by drugs, violence and poverty. Many residents are overwhelmed by low-paying jobs and the struggle to have even their most basic needs fulfilled, with the threat of drug addiction, violence and disease adding to the stress, distraction and danger for the youth. In the face of these constant issues, how can one begin to access and understand the ideals that these monuments profess? What semblance of the illusive ‘American Dream’ remains? '10 blocks' incorporates both the voices of today's youth as well as the oral histories of senior citizens. These seniors lived in DC through segregation, the race riots, the drug/crime/AIDS epidemics, white flight, and now, not only are struggling to keep their homes and salvage their communities due to gentrification, but find themselves, more often than not, alone and isolated, unable to share these incredible histories that they have witnessed and survived. In our current economic and political climate, these symbols fail to represent the reality of America. This reality is one where millions of people go without decent housing, safe streets, good schools and nutritious food, while living under the shadow of the façade our country has built for itself. With the end of these occupations came the loss of their most basic, and perhaps, most profound element; the physical visualization of inequality. How then, as nature, weather, and re-landscaping threaten to white wash any evidence of occupation, will this movement be remembered? This series of photographs is an attempt to capture both the historic and ephemeral elements of the “occupy” movement. The images provide a documentation of the physical imprint created by the tents used during the occupation of public parks in Washington, DC. Within the images, the act of occupation and those who participated are both present and absent.
